What is a general rule, or foolproof way to picking the perfect foundation colour for your skin?

I have a medium to olive complexion. What are the rules in choosing a perfect colour? What is a general rule, or foolproof way to picking the perfect foundation colour for your skin?
I've always been told to try to match as close as you can but on the lighter side so there is no obvious lines. What is a general rule, or foolproof way to picking the perfect foundation colour for your skin?
Try everything, and let the people at the counters help you. Or have some blended for you (eg. at Perscriptives)

Remember to see how it looks AFTER it is applied where you wanted, in NATURAL light - some products may look great on at the counter, but make you look like a patchy disco ball when you get into the sun!
A lot of makeup counters mix foundation for you, such as Prescriptives. Your foundation needs to blend in with your skin and smooth it out, not look like a layer of makeup over it. I would consult some makeup people in department stores for the best shade.
I don't really have an answer but you have a good question

Im recently making some buget cuts and MAC was cut off so now I have to buy drug store

All the people who answered your question tell you to go to the counter or have a makeup artist mix for you

But another good question is

How do you pick the perfect color for you skin in foundation or powder at a Drug Store that doesn't have makeup artist or sample/testers?
Apart from sampling it at a makeup counter first, there is never a foolproof way.
Ohk well some people say to use a tester and put on the back of your hand to try match the best colour, DONT do this. Test it on your jaw bone instead. When choosing a fundation dont always only try the ones you thin are best. its better to get a variety of opinions and makes sure to blend the foundation in when you aare using a tester. When buying concealer buy one that is one shade darker for a more effective look.

hope this helps!
