How can i tell what colour foundation to get?

I dont want to buy loads of different tones of foundation to try them, so is there anyway that i can use the testers to find out which tone suits me best?

My friends say to put it on the back of my hand and rub it in, and the one that suits it best is the one to get. Is that correct? How can i tell what colour foundation to get?
No, stand in natural light and apply foundation to your jaw line, if it blends nicely and you see no demarcation line, than it is the correct shade.

Most of the people here are giving you terrible advise (except for the first poster), applying foundation to your hand or back of your wrist is a terrible way of determining true skin color. Our faces are exposed to more sun rays than our wrists and hands are, therefore our faces are much more likely to be of a darker complexion. Don't use your hand or wrist as a tester. How can i tell what colour foundation to get?
hi no its not helpful to try foundation on your hands because although your hands may look similar in colour to your face your hands will not match your face exactly, also the face has a lot more oil glands than your hands so what may look and feel good on your hands may not be right for your facial area . your best bet is to get a free consultation at a make up counter in boots or another large department store . they should be able to show you the right foundation for your skin type and shade and if you cant afford it you can always ask them to write it down for you for a later date ,and then you can go and find a similar item that's less expensive . remember its your face so whatever you choose be kind to it.
As a nice alternative to a high-coverage foundation, choose a lighter formula (e.g., sheer) that works with the rest of your face. Then hide visible capillaries with a tiny bit of concealer. ';Painting'; it directly onto red spots with a concealer brush will provide a natural finish that doesn't look caky, Freedman says. Try Clarins Instant Light Perfecting Touch Concealer pen ($26; gloss.com), available in three shades.
go to places like shopping centres where there are representatives of major brands, and get them to try some stuff on you to find the one that is a closest match to your skintone. Very important to do this, as you need to stay as close to natural as possible, to avoid getting lines between where your skin ends and the foundation begins. Foundation sponges are good applicators. Keep it very light and thin.
The best way to test a foundation is by applying a bit to your jaw line in natural light, if possible. Most of us are a medium shade. Only the fairest English roses should use a light. They can wash you out and try to get a colour that has a yellow base, not a pink one. Your skin isn't 'pink'. I use Models Prefer, available from QVCUK and it's not expensive. You should look as though you're not wearing anything on your face, but a smile! Good luck!
no...usually the skin of the hand is different from the skin of the face....you may have a face with different undertones that your hand what makes the foundation blend with a different coloration...you should always try it on ur jawline and if you cant try it there...try to find in your arm a place where the color is really similar to your face
that is one way, though the colour of your hands can differ from you face.

the best way is to apply it behind your and rub it in this would be the most accurate way.

sometimes people find that particular colours dont match their skin and so they mix two together.
I use the testers on my wrist, if it covers the veins then it's the right colour... you should step outside the store once you've tested it because the store lights will make the colour and coverage look different. Always make a decision in natural daylight

You open a bottle. Try just a little bit on your jaw line. If it doesn't match. Wash it off with a remover pad. Do it again until you find your perfect shade. OR

Buy a shade or two above what you think your skin is. It works usually perfectly.
When i buy foundation i put it on the back of my hand and rub it in if i cant notice a big difference in colour i buy that one. If im not wearing make up at the time i put a little on my face and see if it matches.

Yes, try the testers on the back of your hand, or ask the advisor on the counter for help in selecting the correct shade to suit you.
test it on your wrist. thats the colour that's nearest to the colour on your face.
